I think most students are back to school by now, so I thought it would be a good time for me to post this comic. This is based on a real conversation I had with my kindergarten students, but it actually happened last year when I first started showing. The kindergarteners were the first to comment on my rapid weight gain, because they’re the youngest, and no one’s yelled at them about that sort of thing yet. And of course the way they ask is, “Why are you so fat?!” You really need a thick skin to teach elementary school.
Fortunately, most of them guessed I was pregnant, although one guessed donuts, and that wasn’t necessarily a wrong answer.
I thought I might get some funny reactions to my bigger stomach at the beginning of this school year, but for the most part, students remembered I was pregnant from last year. Some of them thought I had already had a baby, and that I was in the process of having a second one. When I tell them that this is the same baby as the one they noticed in June, they ask why it’s taking so long. Frankly, there are days when I ask myself the same question.
