I’m home sick today. I don’t have a new comic to post right now, but I thought I’d share some pictures of the mural I painted in my baby’s room.
Obviously, the theme is Vikings. Friendly Vikings. I didn’t think raping and pillaging were appropriate for a newborn. So, instead, I have a pair of well-meaning Vikings who have encountered a sea monster friend, and a Viking showing off his new sword to his reindeer buddy.
The whole room probably took me about a week to paint. This was during the summer when I had off work (I’m a teacher).
I started by doing some sketches in my sketchbook, then just freehand drawing everything in pencil on the wall. I have a friend who has a projector for this sort of thing, and in retrospect, that probably would have been a better idea. It’s surprisingly hard to cover up/erase pencil marks on a wall!
For the large portions, I used paint from Sherwin Williams. They have a few different collections of paint, I used whatever was cheapest. And, I only bought the paint in the sample sizes. Except green, for the solid green walls. For everything else, I used Chroma acrylic mural paint I bought online at Dick Blick. It worked really well, but I’ll bet any type of acrylic would have done the trick. This brand was (I think) slightly less expensive than buying acrylic paint from a tube.
So, there you go. Hopefully you enjoyed the photos. I’ll try to post some more pictures when the furniture and everything comes together!
